Foolish Old Man

Foolish Old Man

Representative Markey deserves the honor of being the subject of my first “Dunce of the Day” post.

Rep. Markey co-sponsored the bill establishing the program “Cash for Clunkers.”

Cash for Clunkers is foolish on 101 different levels.

Markey and his ilk promoted the program with two arguments:  1) that it would reduce carbon emissions and 2) that it would be good to spur an economic recovery.  Both of these ideas are foolish.  They can only come from a genuine DUNCE.

While the new cars that people purchase may get slightly better gas mileage, one must take into account the carbon emissions associated with building the new cars and scrapping the old, perfectly useful cars.  Saving a few hundred gallons of gas hardly makes the premature construction of a new car worthwhile.

The notion that the economy can be helped by getting people to scrap perfectly good cars is a modern version of the fallacy of the broken window.

Such legislation can only be the product of a fool who CLEARLY never took economics 101.

Congratulations, Rep. Markey:  YOU ARE A DUNCE!

Here is the text of the email that I sent to his office informing him of this honor:

Dear Rep. Markey,

I would like to congratulate you on being named “Dunce of the Day” on my blog, kylevarner.com. You co-sponsored the legislation establishing “Cash for Clunkers,” and such legislation could only come from someone with a mental deficiency.

How many copies of Chromosome 21 do you have? My guess: >2.

Congratulations, and keep up the good work! Millions of Americans are counting on you to continue sponsoring foolish legislation and thereby help them to gain access to their unemployment benefits.

With Kind Regards,

Kyle Varner

dunce2Our world is full of foolish people.  Dunce may be an arcane term, but it’s catchy, and applies quite well to a whole lot of politicians and other public figures.

So, I’m creating a new category:  Dunce of the Day.  I’ll try to make a post every day, though I’ll likely skip a few days here and there. This should be fun.

In most cases, when I feature someone as the “Dunce of the Day,” I’ll try to find a way to let them know they’ve been honored as such…and of course I’ll post any replies that I get!
